#yegfood Hansik Korean Cuisine

I never have the opportunity to explore the north side of Edmonton generally because of how far it is from where I live. However on Monday, I had the rare opportunity to go up north to check out the new Hansik Korean Restaurant (13727 127 St NW).

cold buckwheat noodles (mul-naengmyeon), black bean sauce noodle (jajangmyeon), stir fried rice cake (tteok-bokki), veggie pancake (veggie-jeon)
post meal dishes 🙂

I couldn’t help but be disappointed with the taste. I’m not saying that the food was bad, but we found that flavors were a bit bland. The fried chicken was cooked real crispy and it was moist and tender. But it didn’t have enough sauce on it. The cold buckwheat noodle was good but we would’ve liked it to be colder. All the dishes seemed to be lacking that last 10% to make it good. They’re still in their early phases as they’re relatively new to the Edmonton scene, so I hope that as they settle into the scene there will be some improvements.

#yegfood Büdok

I have couple friends that all have their birthdays in June and since couple years back, we started doing one night where we celebrate all of our birthdays together instead of having several separate birthdays. So for this year’s ‘Annual June Birthday Celebration’ we went to Bündok (10228 104 St NW) in downtown.

beef tartare, egg yolk, pickled mustard seeds
grilled apple tartine, oka cheese, clover honey
roasted pork ribs, black vinegar glazed, tomato amaranth
grilled herb marinated hen, shredded brassicas, onion jam
sea bream crudo, apple, thai basil, citrus

I loved the small location as it gave a very intimate feel to the whole experience. We probably should’ve ordered more because after sharing all of our plates, we were far from being full. Definitely had a great experience overall, with my favorite dishes being the beef tartare, apple tartine, and the roasted pork ribs.

#yegfood Dream Tea House – Dream Snow Bingsoo

One of the new ‘it’ things – the biggest trend – for summer 2017 in Edmonton seems to be bingsoo. Not just any kind of bingsoo (shaved ice), but Korean bingsoo. We’ve been seeing them at various Korean restaurants around town, and with two Korean bingsoo focused places opening up soon – Snowy Village & Snowy Desserts – you can’t ignore the increase in popularity of this item this summer!

Dream Tea House recently launched their own menu of Korean bingsoo. You have the option of choosing from seven different choices: matcha, mocha cheesecake, strawberry, cotton candy, mango, injeolmi, and oreo.

My friends and I were definitely surprised to see the Cotton Candy Snow Bingsoo as it came with a side of gigantic stick of pink cotton candy! It definitely was a show-stealer as we got amazed gazes from other customers around us.

From the top left, going clockwise: Injeolmi (인절미) Snow Bingsoo, Cotton Candy Snow Bingsoo, Matcha Snowbingsoo, Oreo Snow Bingsoo

[update] I have tried all 7 flavors of the bingsoo and would say that the matcha one (plus extra condensed milk ;P) is my favorite.

#yegfood Hanjan

Hanjan (3735 99 St NW, Edmonton, AB)

Visited the newest addition to the Korean cuisine community last week while they were still in their soft opening phase.

They’ve definitely got a unique interior that sets them apart from the other Korean restaurants in the city. (Serious aesthetics goals)

[From the top left going clockwise: 수육 (sliced boiled pork belly), 잡채 (japchae), 국물 떡볶이 (spicy rice cake), 간장치킨 (soy sauce chicken)]

My friends and I were pretty hungry so we decided to order five plates thinking we got this. Man, did we overestimate ourselves by A LOT. We found ourselvex taking home some of the left-overs but none of us regretted it because they were all worth it!

Hanjan also offer a number of dessert selections from waffles, other flavors of shaved ice, honey butter bread, and bungeoppang (붕어빵 – a common winter street food staple in Korea consisting of a fish shaped pastry with red bean paste stuffing) which I am certainly looking forward to trying the next time.

#yegfoodfriday : Baijiu

I read about Baijou in an article somewhere on Monday. And after a quick search I found that they would be opening the following Wednesday. So naturally I had to go check it out on Friday. I had two of my girl friends who I haven’t seen in months to join me for this #yegfoodfriday.

Very true to their description, the place had a very rustic boozy vibe.

I took a picture of the menu to remind myself what we ordered so that I could post about it. Or so I thought… Later that night as I was looking through my camera roll, the photo of the menu were no where to be found. Also the restaurant had a very dark lighting situation going on so all my pictures were needless to say useless.

Anyways, we ordered a clam dish, a chicken dish, and a squid noodle dish. (sorry for the lack of better description) All three of us agree that the clam and the squid dish was most certainly delicious. Of course we had to order some dessert as well. There were two dessert options on the menu so naturally we ordered both ;P One was a sweet bao sandwich and the other a meringue incorporated citrus plate. All three of was were very caught off guard with the meringue dish. It took couple bites before we got used to it. However at the end we all agreed that the citrus definitely helped as a palate cleanser.

All throughout today, I was feeling the December blues. The weather got cold  suddenly, and I was just not having a day. So what better way to get myself out of this little slump than treat myself. And not just any chocolate, but the finest in Edmonton – Jacek Chocolate!

(FYI: No, I did not devour both sets by myself! I’m going to be sending a set as a surprise Christmas gift to a friend in another province ☺)

This year’s Holiday Collection includes: Clause Bite, Peppermint Meltaway, Hazelnut, Burnt Salted Caramel, Spiced Apple Caramel, and Audrey Bite. Read more about each flavor on their website 🙂
